Diese erinnern in ihrer Beschreibung weniger an Passagiere als an die Insassen eines heutigen Flüchtlingsboots. Es kommen nicht so sehr einzelne Individuen in den Blick, sondern eine anonyme Masse, die hilflos von Naturgewalten hin und hergeworfen wird, und das in einer höchst fortschrittlichen, hochtechnisierten Welt - in der Erzählung ebenso wie heute in der Realität. In Conrads Erzählung wird die koloniale Perspektive durch einen Akt der Fairness aufgehoben. Das Buch enthält sechs Illustrationen von Maurice Greiffenhagen aus der Erstausgabe von Typhoon im Jahr 1902.
