Cosmi Games 81180 Editorial Review
** UFO Afterlight - Windows PC DVD** UFO Afterlight is a compelling addition to the strategy game genre, particularly appealing to fans of its spiritual predecessor, X-COM. The game successfully melds engaging gameplay with a rich narrative, taking place on a terraformed Mars where players command a squad of unique soldiers, each imbued with their personal backstories that enhance the tactical experience. The emotional weight of character relationships presents a layer of depth rarely seen in strategy games; for instance, the psychological impact of a soldier's death is reflected through their performance metrics, making every decision feel significant. Visually, the game adopts a slightly cartoonish art style that contrasts with its serious themes, and while some players might find this jarring, many appreciate the aesthetics within the context of the gameplay. The strategic elements are plentiful, with extensive options for research and production that can initially overwhelm new players, yet reward exploration and experimentation. While the game can be challenging, even at beginner difficulty, it beckons players to adjust squad management strategies and explore various research trees for optimal benefits. However, there are notable drawbacks. The limited number of factions available for alliances can restrict gameplay variety, and some technical issues, such as occasional crashes and resolution problems, may require players to tweak settings to fully enjoy the gameplay experience. Features like an autocamera function can also be bothersome, although players have the option to deactivate it. Overall, UFO Afterlight's captivating storyline and robust gameplay mechanics overshadow its shortcomings, making it a worthwhile investment for strategy enthusiasts and nostalgic fans of the genre. **
