- Clear, Varathane Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner-381123, Quart is designed to promote uniform stain penetration and help control grain raise when used before staining. This conditioner prepares wood surfaces for Varathane Water-Based Wood Stain, helping prevent blotching and streaking for a smooth, even color appearance. Suitable for all types of wood, it should be used as the first step in any water-based staining project. Apply with a rag, foam brush, or synthetic bristle brush, and do not allow excess conditioner to dry on the surface. Lightly sand with #220 fine-grade sandpaper 20–30 minutes after application. Stain after 60 minutes, then finish with Varathane Polyurethane.
