Romanın bazı siyahi karakterleri kimi kolaylıklar; sözgelimi bir konser bileti alabilmek ya da bir restoranda yemek yiyebilmek için “geçer”; ancak bir yandan da siyahiler arasında yaşayıp ırksal kimliklerini kucaklarlar.
